david, it could take weeks or months for your arm to recover, it's hard to predict. i think the above replies are all correct on icing and resting and strengthening, but i have a slightly different opinion here. i think your priority, once you are fully healed, should be to find out why this happened in the first place so you can prevent it from happening again. generally, proper tennis strokes do not cause pain. but it only takes small deviations from proper form to overstress the muscles and tendons. i would recommend that you sign up for a lesson with the best teaching pro you can find, explain your situation and ask him/her to help you identify those elements of your stroke mechanics that are the likely source of the problem and correct them. only when you rid your game of these technical issues will you get rid of tennis elbow for good. and again, one cannot overemphasize the importance of icing, rest, and strengthening.

best of luck.

rest and ice that sucker as much as you can. you're looking at a couple of weeks to relieve that pain.

to prevent tennis elbow, go to a sporting goods store and buy a few grip, wrist, and forearm excercise devices and work the ever loving crap out of them. within time you will build up your wrists and forearms and that will completely prevent any future tennis elbow issues.

but you're looking towards at least a week of being on the shelf.

Never, if you mean recovered to the extent that you can go and do everything you were doing before, with the same intensity, as if nothing has happened. There is a process afoot which means things are starting to go downhill for you. From reading your account, I guess you're male and getting pretty close to age 40. Am I right? Accept some limitations, and you should be back to a generally active life in three months.

My mom has had it for about a year. IT has been said you may never recover fully. However my mom plays tennis now and does so well. She just has to put a strap on every time. If you get tennis magazine then, read the August or september issue as one of those had an article on that. It may have been before august but it was 07!
