What exercises would you recommend to someone who wants to play tennis?
e.g sit-ups, press-ups, star jumps etc

To tell you the truth… tennis is all about agility, getting to one point of the court, and extension of arms and legs, I suggest coourt sprints in sets ( Usually those go, out line to to out line x10 and repeat until you cant move ). Stretching is most definately a must. Strength is a factor when it comes to serves so I suggest pull ups, if you cant do those stick with some weights. We used to focus on mostly agility though.. this was one thing that is the game decider as long you as you can place the ball well in the court.
things to work your wrists especially. you’ll need arm strength and a little leg strength too. use small weights and move them back and forth, up and down to work your wrists. my friend who’s amazing at tennis does that all the time to work her wrists. do them as fast as you can.
do lunges, running, pushups, work on runnning in different directions
practicing things like sprints are really important since your going to sometimes get to the ball quickly.
running in general will help get you in shape and just because your on a small court doesnt mean that isnt important.
push ups will give you the strength in your arms as well. but the most important thing is not to push yourself. take it slow and work up to longer harder excersize. music is always something good to work out to also. so make a playlist or soemthing of some upbeat songs.
Flamingo, lunges, sprints, suicides, and jogging in place.
When I was a kid, my late coach would ask me to run around the tennis courts (total of 6 in one lot) thrice before I started practise sessions with him. He always said that it helped to be nimble and attentive. Although I hated it when I actually did it, I realized that it was a lot easier for me to move in the court afterward than when I went to the court directly without any prior jogging. He’s no longer alive, but I’ll remember his words forever.
Some additional things you can do is basic stretching before you run. That should do. You dont actually have to overwork yourself before playing tennis.
sit-ups are very helpful, as they strengthen the abs and back, both of which are prime suspects for injury to tennis players. indeed, it really isn’t a question of "if" your back will hurt, it’s "when" it will hurt. press-ups are always helpful for general fitness. squats, leg-press and squat jumps (no weights on those
are helpful for an explosive jump into a serve. i agree with those below that stretching is very important for tennis. agility and flexibility are crucial. on that note, i would not recommend much arm and chest excercises. this bulks up the shoulder, giving it less flexibility for those spin serves that are so necessary.
You need good footwork on the court so I suggest jumping rope and lots of legs exercises (lunges, squats, sprints)
