Which exercises should I do to prepare for tennis?

I’m considering starting tennis this upcoming summer and pursuing it for the next year or two but as of yet I have had no training for tennis.

I need to know what exercises I need to do in order to be ready for practice and such. By exercises, I don’t mean like exercises that involve tennis rackets or a tennis court or anything. Just normal exercises like push ups or bicep curls, things of that nature.

I saw from another yahoo answers question that the major muscles needed to be most effective in tennis were the shoulder, the forearms, and the quadriceps (excluding the obvious answers like the brain and the heart).

So what exercises do you recommend I do in order to be ready?

First off u need 2 work on foot work. 2 do this u can jump from side to side or move ur feet rly fast up n down. u can also make 5 points around ur standing then jump to each of those points then back to the center. Nxt leg and core muscles are very important. Find a block and explode off it (jump) on one leg. Then switch legs. Sounds boring I no but it rly helps. Also do 6 inches also called leg lifts. Lie down and lift ur legs 6 inches or around that hieght of the ground. Hold it as long as u can. (this helps core and legs) Also do sit ups and crunches. I don’t no where u heard that the shoulder is important but all ur power comes from ur legs and core. That and the rotation of ur body. Arms help but they arent the major thing. However ur forearm does help when u r volleying 2 pack extra punch. Also do many sprints. Tennis is all about speed and how fast u can reach the ball. Do a sprint, rest, then do another. Now if ur up to it, do push ups and curls. Throwing a medicine ball helps 2. throw it in the motion u would swing a tennis racquet with two hands. This helps develop a clean stroke. If you do all this regularly you should have a head start for tennis nxt season. 🙂

The main two things that you need for tennis is fair shoulder strength and good ankle strength. These are the two joints that take the most abuse. Honestly, if you do general workouts such as basic weight lifting (curls, push ups, butterfly lifts) and some jogging, you should be fine. You may also want to do some wind sprints to get your explosive acceleration up and strengthen your ankles.
