Well i had vertigo and my excercises that i was given is similar. but a bit different. I had to look up and one spot.. lay down the same way you do right and left. but instead of looking straight up, i had to have my head in a 45 degree angle for 15 seconds, and i had to do it 5 time right side and left side. and then do the same with my eyes closed. It’s a Modified version of this excersise. Do they both work the same?

I am a physical therapy student and this is a good reference for the Brandt-Daroff exercise if you know you have BPPV. HOWEVER, these exercises only treat one specific kind of vertigo called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). If you are experiencing symptoms of vertigo you should see a physical therapist or doctor. You may have another kind of vertigo that won’t be helped using this exercise or you may have vertebral basalar insufficiency which is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY.

I am an audiologist & I just want to let people know if you have vertigo you should see an audiologist who diagnoses & treats vestibular disorders. 95% of my pt’s are vestib. pt’s and 80% of those pt’s have BPPV. We don’t ever recommend treating BPPV with Brandt-Daroff exercises. They are not typically successful in the treatment of BPPV. We use them as a fatiguing exercise in specific situations. Please seek out a professional if you have vertigo & don’t rely on the web for treatment.

You can also see a physical therapist to find out which (inner) ear is affected (Dix-Hallpike Test), if vision provokes vertigo (gaze-induced nystagmus), if the dizziness is provoked or made worse by neck stiffness (cervicogenic dizziness) or if there are orthopedic, proprioceptive or central (CVA) causes for dizziness, vertigo and risk of future falls.

I am a physical therapist – I made the video for my patients and I give written instructions after treatment on how to use B-D for follow-up.

Thanks for making this video. MD at a clinic gave me some exercises to do for the vertigo but these exercises seem better.

  12. Burleyson, 22 August, 2009

This makes no sense. I visited an audiologist and they did exactly what this PT did in the video. It sounds like you just want business for your “profession”. This PT is offering help with a good method of treatment that my ENT also gave me and you are complaining! Ger a real job!

Thank you so much for sharing this video. My mother has suffered with this for years causing 2 major falls one of which caused a triple breakage in her ankle which required major surgery to fix it.

If you have any other exercises that may help her, please send them along my way.

    Most appreciative…

The Brandt-Daroff exercise for vertigo will help controll vertigo in time.Once you get rid of the problem, like me,you don’t have to exercise every single day anymore. If you feel like the vertigo symptoms coming up,just continue exercising again and besides,it’s free. After so many years of discomfort I now can live normally without these terrible dizyness.

    Hello there.great video !

  23. dtgutman, 10 March, 2010

Yes, today my audiologist (a well-respected specialist at a very highly ranked research hospital) specifically told me to watch this video to review how to do the Brandt-Daroff technique after the Eppley procedure failed to work for me. I would say there are other opinions besides those of the audiologist who commented above. Thanks very much to the physical therapist poster of this video!

  24. dtgutman, 10 March, 2010

My audiologist said this does not work overnight, but he said it can help to dissolve the crystals faster – often over a period of 1-2 weeks. He said to continue the exercises 3 times a day (morning, noon, night) and to do 3-5 reps each time. I tried this for the first time today but could only get through 3 times as the dizziness was so intense. The doc said to keep doing these until I could go 2 days in a row without symptoms.

I haven’t been to the doctor to find out which side is my worst (though I think it’s my left), but since this exercise is done in both directions, I’m wondering what harm there is in just guessing and doing it anyway?
