I just got a tattoo (my first). How should I best explain to my 4yo daughter?

I got two tattoos, one on the inside of each elbow. These are my first, and their position makes it kinda hard to keep hidden. I’m worried about how to properly answer my 4yo daughter’s questions when she sees them.

Probably something like:

What are those?
Why don’t they wash off?
Why did I get them?
Why can’t she get some?

I had these same questions asked to me when I worked in daycare and got a tattoo, it way on my foot so all the children could see it and were very curious.

    I told them:

It’s a special drawing on my skin, it’s called a tattoo.
A person uses a special pen that goes onto my skin, but it can’t wash off.
I got it because I think it looks good.
Only grown ups can get them, if they want to.
It hurts a little bit now, so please be careful. Soon, it won’t hurt and then you can touch it.
I put this cream on to keep it clean.

Your daughter (like some of the daycare children) might draw on herself with pen thinking it’s the same thing! That’s always a cute photo opportunity! Don’t get mad, she’s just copying you, although once hers keep washing off and yours doesn’t she’s soon get bored!

Why can’t you just tell her the truth?

Just explain to her what they are. I have two tattoos and my girls are 3 and 4 and they wondered what they were at first and I just told them it was a tattoo and I let them touch it and they just were curious for a while always wanting to touch it. Try getting her temp tattoos so she feel like you. My girls love that they understand that these will washed off after awhile but just explain to her that yours won’t. When she gets a little older she may understand it more. Hope this helps!

    Ok first she is 4!
People get tattoos all the time! for god sake if you cant explain a tattoo to a child then how are you going to go when she starts to ask where babies come from???
seriously you couldn’t work this one out for yourself?
Just tell her they are decorations that some grown ups get. she will not be all the interested and and will just more then likely have a whatever attitude towards it any ways or may not even notice

when I got a tattoo my friends little girl asked what it was and I told her it was a grown up decoration and she didn’t really care or worry about or question the explanation.

It’s not that big of a deal, unless they are disturbing images. But I would just tell her that they are tattoos, and they don’t wash off because they are permanent, and that she is also too young to get one because it might hurt her. Then take her to get an ice cream because they’re good 🙂 Hope this helps.

well its a decision u make when your an adult. tell her the truth about why u got them and why u like them. but tell her they are there for life explain body art to her. its been done by lots of cultures for century’s. like the Maoris in new zealand. if she wants one tell her she can decide when shes an adult.making them taboo makes them want them more,
