Can a failed attempt at drawing blood from the inside elbow area do any kind of serious damage?

A few days after this happened (she poked around alot!), my inside arm from the wrist to the elbow was all sore, like it was bruised but with no bruise showing. It’s now over a week and getting no better. It’s almost like I can feel my sore vein there! Is there anything I need to worry about, I mean could bacteria or anything gotten in there. Mind you, no blood was drawn from that site – She got someone else to do it on the other arm and I feel nothing over there. I’m just not sure if I should have it checked out or not. I know the soreness is definately from the attempt, but don’t know what could be wrong. Thanks for any input.

I would assume that your vein was bruised or she may have caused a hematoma. I would notify the Dr’s. office or facility manager where you had the blood work performed. Also, if you have a history or plasma donation or drug use this makes blood draws more difficult. Either way, next time ask for a experienced phlebotomist that has more experience with difficult sticks. You may also request a butterfly needle to be used (smaller in guage & less pressure when tube is attached to other end.) If it’s been a week & your still sore consult a physician. Although rare there may be some nerve or vein damage.

The nurse probably blew a vein. If it doesn’t go away in a week.. see your doctor.

calll the office and tell the dr. call you dr and make appt just to check some people have no business drawing blood. Next time after the second try tell them to stop and ask for someone else. That is totally wrong of them.

My guess would be that the blood leaked into the muscle, deep where you can’t see it. What an incompetent blood drawer that @*#$! was.

No. The needle used to draw blood has a razor edge on it to go into your skin. So if she was fishing for your vein it probably cut you in there a little. You have a bruse it’s a hematoma. A blood tumor. Or a bruise. It will heal.

What you have is deep tissue bruising. It’s going to take a little bit longer than a week to go away. You need to remember that besides veins and arterys there’s muscle, adipose, connective tissue and NERVES running through your body. Nerves are ESPECIALLY SENSITIVE to being poked and prodded.

Bacteria is of little concern unless the needles were being shared….

Your fine, she probably hit your tendon. There are also some nerves in that area.

I remember there was this one time when I had blood drawn for a test, and they had trouble getting blood out of my one arm. They had to go to the other arm for the blood they needed. I had bruising on the arm for about a week, but it went away on its own.
