What do these symptoms mean for my husband?
My husband has cardiomyopathy. Is it normal for these symptoms to be related to this disease? Knuckles hurt on feet & hands, hurting wrists, hurting elbows, hurting knees and hurting ankles. So we know it’s a "joint thing". He also complains about his muscles of his calves and thighs hurting…or at least being sore and tender. It takes him a minute to get off the couch. Any advice would be appreciated….Thanks! Amy

Yes, joint pain is a common symptom of cardiomyopathy.
Cardiomyopathy symptoms may include:
- Breathlessness with exertion or even at rest
- Swelling of the legs, ankles and feet
- Bloating of the abdomen due to fluid buildup
- Fatigue
- Irregular heartbeats that feel rapid, pounding or fluttering
- Dizziness, lightheadedness and fainting
Home Treatment (Mayo Clinic):
Apply heat or cold
Heat can help ease your pain and relax tense, painful muscles. One of the easiest and most effective ways to apply heat is to take a hot shower or bath for 15 minutes. Other options include using a hot pack or an electric heating pad set on its lowest setting.
Cold may dull the sensation of pain. Cold also has a numbing effect and decreases muscle spasms. Don’t use cold treatments if you have poor circulation or numbness. Techniques may include using cold packs, soaking the affected joints in cold water and ice massage.
