tendinitis is a term that means swollen or inflamed elbow so he is not wrong. (itis means "inflamed tissue"). The important thing is did he do anything to help you or did he just tell you what you had and send you on your way.
The most effective conventional and alternative treatments for tennis elbow have the same basic premise: Rest the arm until the pain disappears, then massage to relieve stress and tension in the muscles, and exercise to strengthen the area and prevent re-injury.
Don’t do pushups for a while or you will just keep re-injuring your arm.
Pain is your body telling you something is wrong. If you have tendinitis, you need to rest that arm. Wrap it with a bandage and apply heat for 20 minutes and cold for 20 minutes off and on for a couple of days. Take an anti-inflammatory medicine such as aspirin. Start your push-ups back in about a week. If the pain continues, ask the doctor what to do.
