Is this exercise back for the back?
My high school tennis coach has us do an exercise for conditioning called "Iron-man" and basically what it is, is we hold a push-up in down position except we get to keep our elbows on the ground. We have to hold it that way for a minute, sometimes a minute and a half, keeping our backs straight. My coach says this is good for the abdominals, and that may be true, but I am also wondering if it is bad for the back because I KNOW that lunges (another thing that we do) is bad for your knees, and there may be a strong possibility that the Iron-man is bad for your back, because I feel tension when I do it. Any thoughts?
Is this exercise bad** for the back. Sorry I didn’t realize I spelled back twice. My bad

I call those planks, I think they’re the same… basically, they improve core strength, which the back can be considered part of.
I never feel tension when I do them, and I haven’t heard anybody complain of back pain while doing them, so maybe there’s something about your back in particular…?
Ask your coach about it, he’s probably more knowledgeable than me.
