Why do athletes wear thin strips or bands near elbows or knees?

Why do athletes wear thin strips or bands near elbows or knees? Football recievers, Nadal in tennis, etc.?

Seems to restrict blood flow, but why do that?

Thanks for your input on this one…

Its for tendonitis. It adds a little warmth and pressure on the tendon passing under it, reducing or eliminating pain.

    Surprising, but it works.

These “bands” will never be as effective as a bandage wrap which acts to retain generated heat
and increase blood flow following a period of iceing. However the bandage look does not compare
to the sexy “band” look so “bands” are IN.
