What is the best treatment for arthritis (both front elbow joints) for my 10 y.o. Chocolate Lab?
My Chocolate Lab (Ginger) is 10 y.o. and has had mod-severe arthritis in both front elbow joints for several years. Ginger’s vet and orthopaedic surgeon has prescribed Mobic and now Tramadol, but neither has made a difference. Since Ginger is nearing 10 y.o., I’m trying to avoid surgery. Ginger’s very happy, but her limp is getting worse and worse. What can I do?

ever try plain jane ibuprofen works for us why not a dog
Get her out of pain asap. I think they have some sort of cortisone shots?? Try a second & third opion from different vets.
i know this sounds really wierd, but try and find her a good massage therapist.

seriously try a joint treatment with glucosamine and chondroitin. i take it for arthritis and it works great. i have a freind who has a yellow lab, his vet reccomended it and it works for him as well, but a dog may have to take a more potent formula than humans..good luck
I have a Black Lab who suffers from permanent nerve damage. My vet told me to give him 81 mg of asprin every day. He’s three years old and has been have nerve, bone and joint problems since he was a puppy, and the asprin seems to work. Also keep him away from cold places, it tends to stiffen up there joints.
Are you feeding her a senior diet food for large breed dogs? It should contain glucosamine. Iams, Science Diet, Nutro, Natural Choice, and many others contain this. It’s a supplement that helps replenish the bone and cartilage.
Also, we like to use either Rimadyl or Ultram on our arthritic patients. We have found that these to meds work the best. There is a risk of liver damage with any meds you give her though.
My dog Jake, had arthritis in his back legs I would just buy him some joint medication from the store and that seemed to work, he doesn’t limp anymore. And he was 8 years old at the time, he’s 10 now.
you have to keep your dog excersing and warm the joints use a heating pad to help and if she is over weight get the weight off of her. and see the vet
I have a 14 yr old cat, and she limps badly in her front right leg. I am giving her glucosamine, and her limp has improved a lot. I give her what is called "hipaction" it has glucosamine and chondroitin and also vitamins. They also have it for dogs, called "hipaction" too. I would recommend it. Get it at pet stores. You need to keep him on it for awhile to see a difference.

Order two Solid Gold products: Sun Gold yucca, and Seameal.
Give according to directions and Ginger’s weight, twice daily in wet food. Hint–the Seameal only lasts half as long, so you’d best get twice as much of it.
No kidding–I saw a 2-year-old stallion go from the WORST case of juvenile arthritis I’d ever seen in my life–on animal or human–to normal again, inside of 3 months, after I told his owners about this product. They had already spend a few thousand dollars on fancy veterinary treatments, to no avail. He was about to be put down, for humane reasons, as he couldn’t even walk anymore.
I take these products myself, for my own arthritis, too. Either it will work, or it won’t. But it should at least help. If it’s gonna work at all, you’ll see an improvement within 3 to 4 weeks.
The products are not expensive, can be ordered from dealers all over the counry (hint–order from the next state over, and pay no tax!), but no allopathic veterinarian is gonna let you know about this alternative treatment. Maybe, because it DOES work…
I hope for Ginger’s sake, you at least give this a try. I do not work for this company, and have no financial interests in it whatsoever. But I have a huge interest in alternative treatments for animals, because I have had good fortune with alternative methods of treatment when nothing else worked, on many animals, many conditions. .
i would go to your vet they have a medicine called rimadyl which is awesome for dogs with arthritis dont give motrin or ibubrofen its deadly for dogs and cats baby aspirin can be given but due to age i would consult your vet so you can get dosage and side affects there is treatment for arthritis in dogs but dont just medicate on your own consult your vet first
I just saw something on this on Good Morning America last week.
They said vets will have food that will help a tremendous amount on the older dogs joints. They will also have meds but they highly recommended the food and said it was probably better than the meds.
i don’t know but i hope you can figure something out, i love animals!

Try putting her in a warm tub for awhile so that the warmth will soothe her. My ex used to put my dog in a whirlpool for a very short time at a low temp (so he wasn’t ever in danger of getting hurt or burned) and it seemed to help.
I give my 9 year old Black Lab buffered/coated Aspirin twice a day. He definitely moves around a lot better with the pain pills. My dog is over 100 pounds, so a little Aspirin is fine.
My Vet says that it is safe to give coated Asprin to dogs, but DO NOT give dogs TYLENOL products as it can be deadly to dogs.
Motrin/Ibuprofen is probably safe like Aspirin, but I don’t know for sure.
