Hey,

I’ve had pain in my elbow for a week now, that’s been getting worse. Over the weekend especially – despite the fact I was completely rested. Also some swelling has started.

Today I went to a Dr who was very un-sympathetic and barely examined the elbow. He shrugged at it and said "it had only been a week", must be tennis elbow and didn’t seem to hurt that much. Despite me insitsting it hurt more at night than early morning (my appt. was 8.30am) and it had stopped me sleeping all night. He said to take ibruprofen for a week or two and more or less shoved me out the door.

Trouble is – looking online it states tennis elbow is very rarely accompanied by swelling. Also said it should be given complete rest from whatever hurt it. But I think mine is caused by typing and he told me to carry on as normal.

And I also don’t know if I can resume my gym activities that I paused over xmas and was about to start up.

Any help appreciated.

Okies,I asked a q like this before, but my problem is getting a bit more serious @ this stage. My right elbow is SERIOUSLY swollen for the past 2/3 months, and nobody seeme to know whats wrong with it!!=( I’ve gone to a really good orthapedic doc,and he said it was prob bruising or bleeding, and put me ina sling and prescribed anti-inflamatories. So that was grand and we went off, thinking my arm would be as-good-as-new. We made an appt. to see him again after 2 weeks, but my arm was not any bit better. He took x-rays,but they showed no fracture. This was really annoying, because the doc just laughed because he was hiding the fact that he was confused. He said to come bac to him in a few months if I wasn’t getting better. During these months,I was in another hospital, and another doc saw me and he took more x-rays and, again,it showed no fracture. He put it down to tennis elbow, and gave me steroid injections. He said that I’d be better in a few weeks with using the anti-inflamatory gel we have
but the swelling has NOT gone down any bit. I started going to physio, and she doesn’t have a clue whats going on either, but she feels there is something seriously wrong with it. I really don’t know what to do now,and I am in soooo much pain, and the pain is even worse when you don’t know whats wrong with you. We are making an appt with the original doc,but I have a feeling he will say rest, and anti-inflammatories and painkillers(which don’t work anymore)
but I HAVE rested, and done everything I can,but nothings helping!! I really wanna get it sorted,so do you people have any suggestions?? I really need help, its been going on for the past 2-3 months, and I wanna get rid of the pain!!
Please help me,any answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
nope,i havnt had an mri scan on it,and they are really expensive(in ireland, anyway)and I’ve already had one on my knee, and I’m getting one on my head. Health insurance will cover it,but ill be waiting months for it,and im in a bit too much pain to wait,i wanna sort it out! Thanks anyway

I doubt its an infection, because I’m not felling more unwell than usual lol,and its not red or anything, but it is radiating heat..???
And ‘singlegal’,thanks, and I have arthritis too,I’m 15. But I will keep trying, and doctors have dismissed me alot too, even in other things, like my ACL,its torn and they said it was something completley different! Thanks a mill.
‘indiarulz’…I would if I could but I can’t. Sori! But I shall describe it: the bone running along the top of the arm(radius?) is 1-3inches more up than on my other arm,and because of this,it looks like it is bent. The bone on the back of my elbow seems quite swollen also…did that help?? oh,and instead of the lower bone in my arm sticking down a bit,it is sticking up into my arm, like its kinda disappeared…

I have a dr’s appt on tuesday, and I’m not using this for medical advice, but the last couple weeks I’ve had problems with both my hands going numb, and it’s hard to “wake them up”. Also, my right arm is KILLING me. The elbow area and upper arm area.

IDK what it is, it could be a pinched nerve, it could be carpal tunnel, it could be tennis elbow. I guess i’ll find out tuesday, but the only way I can describe the pain in my right arm is…sciatica on both sides of my arm, into my pinky & thumb. anyone else have these symptoms?

I’m wondering if i’ll have to see a specialist, i’m just in a ton of pain, so i’m going to stop typing & ice my elbow.

Thanks in advance!

I had surgery on both arms for tennis elbow/tendinitis. My arms were not healing as fast as my doctors thought they should, so I asked my doctor for a prescription for deep tissue massage in my arms (to help the tendinitis). He gave me one and I called a licensed place that stated in the phone book that they do deep tissue massage therapy. I called them on the phone and made sure that they do this type of work and they said yes, no problem, just bring in my prescription to my first appt. So I did, and it ended up being a Chiropractors office which was clearly not set up for deep tissue massage on the arms. He has been working on my neck and back since end of August and at first at the end of each session he would pay some attention to my arms for about a minute. I questioned him about this because I was concerned about workers comp not paying the bill for a chiropractors office and he assured me that if they don’t that my Blue Choice will pay for it. He also said that he would
write me up a release stating that I would never see a bill from them (to ease my mind). I finally told him that I felt I was clearly in the wrong place, and he told me that the neck and arms are connected and that it would benefit me, so I continued to set up appts. I did however tell him though that I didn’t feel that this was the place for me as far as massage for my arms. He then asked one of the massage therapists that work in the same building with him come in and speak with me about how much it would cost me per 1/2 hour for the massage that I need for my arms! Oh yeah, and the letter of release that he gave me only states that I am not responsible for copays! I called the insurance company today and it is in review and they told me that if workers comp does not pay for it, I might have to go before a judge and jury, so I called the Chiropractor’s office and told him this and that I want a letter stating I will never see a bill and he is being testy with me. I am going to
go to my appointment today just so I can get that letter, but I don’t appreciate him making me out to me the a-hole when he clearly mislead me from the beginning just so he could get my business. What should I do if he doesn’t give me that letter and I end up having to waste my time with court and get a bill? I am really aggrivated. Not only has he wasted my time, but I did not get the deep tissue massage on my arms that I needed.

tendonitis of both arms and tennis elbow of both arms for 3 years. I have been going to physical therapy on and off for 3 years. The first year it started out in my wrist, so I went for physical therapy and it went away. When it came back the next year it went up my forearms, so I went to physical therapy and it went away. The third year it went to my elbows and I have been out of work since April of 2006. I tried therapy for 6 months as to try and rule out surgery. It did not work this time so I had both arms operated on. I had the tennis elbow surgery done arthroscopically. I have been going to therapy twice a week since April of 2006. My right arm was operated on November 06 and my left arm March 07. I am still going to physical therapy. My right arm was doing well for a while and is acting up again, and my left arm, although has gotten somewhat better, refuses to heal. My doctor told me that he is sending me back to work without restrictions at my next appt. I know that I will further injure myself if I do.
This is a workers comp case from an injury at work and my lawyers can’t do anything against what my doctors say. So my question for you is, why am I not healing as fast as the doctors believe I should be? And is there something else that I could have where maybe I was misdiagnosed and that could possibly be the reason that I am not responding to the treatment that I am getting? The pain has moved to the inside of my elbow joints now and is traveling back down my forearms in the pain of tendoinitis again. I am very distraught about this. I feel I have done everthing I could possibly do to cure this problem. They have never given me and MRI even when I asked for one. I need to find a doctor that will listen to me and not worry about stepping on another doctors "toes" and really hear my concerns. I don’t want to end up totally disabled, I want to be healed. What should I do? I really don’t know what to do anymore. I just want my arms back so I can go back to my normal life.
My questions are these: Is there something I can have besides what they are saying? Is there any other treatment that can advance my healing? Will an MRI show things that might have been missed? How do I get a doctor to listen to me? Why am I not healing as fast as they "think I should?" I really need advice from a professional in this area. I am not messing around, I am not trying to stay out of work, I am being honest with my concerns and I feel like nobody cares. Please help!!!
In response to Mystify’s thorough and helpful answer, My pain started in my right arm and my left arm followed. It is a repetitive injury I incurred at work from typing all day which I believe to have been a poorly set up work station.

I have been suffering from "tennis elbow" in my right elbow (I am right handed) for the past 14 months. I also have lupus and my rheumatologist has been treating me at my routine visits for the elbow as well. He gave me hand outs of exercises & stretches to do which I have done faithfully and prescribed Mobic for inflammation. He has also done cortisone injections on 3 different occasions. The first injection provided excellent relief for 6 months. The next injection lasted 4 1/2 months and this last one never did provide any relief at all. He didn’t want to do anymore injections, referred me to physical therapy, and scheduled an appt. with an orthopaedic dr.

I have been going to physical therapy 3 times a week for the past month. They are doing ultrasound for 10 mins, then stretches, tendon excercises, iontophoresis for 25 mins, then ice for 10 mins.

After therapy the pain is about 50% better that day but by the next day it is back just as before.

I have noticed progressive weakness in my right arm and hand over the past year from me not being able to use it like before. It is extremely painful, tender, and lifting only the slightest of weight sends the pain radiating down to my hand.

I am a stay at home mom and do not participate in sports. Of course they say to stop doing the activity that is causing the injury. I don’t do any repetitive type activites they I am aware of (other than normal housework, etc).

My appt. with the ortho dr. is in 2 more weeks and I was just wondering what anyone with experience with this problem think my next step would be.

The handouts that I have list: 1. Rest, 2. Ice, 3. Anti Inflammatories, 4. Physical Therapy, 5. Cortisone Injections, 6. As final resort: Surgery.

I was hoping to avoid the surgery but I’m afraid we have already tried every other treatment without results.

I didn’t know how long the problem would need to persist before surgery would be considered.

Also, for anyone that has had surgery : was it beneficial and provide relief and also how long of a recovery period is required, and how difficult was the recovery.

Thank you in advance for any info.
