This is a long one, but please bear with me. I’ve got nowhere else to go!

So I’m 20 years old, and for the past few years I’ve had progressive joint and muscle pain. I was perfectly fine until I was 16 when I injured my back, and since then everything’s gone downhill. The injury healed normally, but since then it seems to flare up with inflammation every couple weeks or so and lasts a few days to a week. My hands were the next to go, I thought it was carpal tunnel at first, but it’s in both hands (I’m right handed), and I have pain in my pinkie and the outer part of my hand as well, which rules that out. Also my fingers are beginning to curve inwards and bulb out, if that makes sense My knees started acting up next. They just feel weak, kinda wobbly and they crack every time I bend them. Sometimes at night it feels like I have restless leg syndrome, but even moving around doesn’t help. Ankles are next. I injured them pretty bad a couple years ago, and I’m not sure if I broke or tore something, but if I’m on my feet too much they swell and get pretty painful. Elbows and shoulders after that. My shoulders feel like there’s heavy weights on them, and my elbows feel like I constantly have tennis elbow. Recently my entire body feels stiff, I’m starting to notice that the weather has an effect on how I feel. Dairy products, even calcium supplements trigger the pain. A lot of times my muscles feel like they’ve been strained, even though I’m usually in too much pain to do anything strenuous. I’m tired even after a full night’s sleep, and in the morning it seems like I have to force myself to get up. I was never this way!!

Here’s the thing- I’ve been tested for rheumatoid arthritis several times, and each time has come back negative. I’ve had tons of blood work done, and everything is always normal. I live in a small town, and every doctor I’ve been to tell me that it’s in my head, that it’s growing pains, one doctor even accused me of being a drug dealer trying to get pills to sell! They just don’t seemed concerned!

Has anyone ever had similar symptoms and gotten an accurate diagnosis? And would it be worth the long and agonizing six hour drive to see a fibromyalgia specialist or a rheumatologist? I just need an answer, 20 is too young to be feeling old! I know Yahoo Answers is the last place to ask for help concerning my health, and that no one on here can tell me exactly what it is, but I’ve got nothing else to lose. I’m at my wits end!!

Thank you for your help, and God bless!

We are going through a big audit at work and ever since then I wake up with the joints in my fingers, knees, ankles, toes, elbows, and neck being very stiff and painful, like arthritis. I am 38-years-old and have had osteoarthritis in my fingers since my early 20s (genetic). Could this be arthritis brought up by on-the-job stress? (The only over-the-counter painkiller that works is ibuprofen, and ibuprofen makes me go to sleep, even if I take only 200 mg)

Hi I’m a 16 year old female. I have been having a lot of pain. Hopefully someone can help me figure it out. Thank you.
Here are the details:
-active in dance for the past 9 years
-experienced back pain for the following week after my season was over, but this is typical after season
-season lasts about 6 months
-It has now been a month since the season is over and I am still experiencing the following pain
-continued back pain
-shoulder pain in both shoulders which started occuring 2 weeks before season was over
-periodic, but minimal pain in ankle (twisted several years ago and it hasn’t fully recovered)
-periodic, but minimal discomfort in knee (it tracks to the side, so it may not be uncommon for pain)
-neck has started to be uncomfortable (stiff, sore, etc.)
-periodic elbow pain in both elbows
-periodic wrist pain
-none of this is horrible pain, but it is not comfortable and most of it persists throughout the entire day

I am not sure if it is just due to overuse with intense season or if it could be due to something such as arthritis. I am just concerned because the back pain usually goes away within the first two weeks after the season ends. Also all this other joint pain. Thank you for any help. It is truly appreciated.
BTW I don’t think it’s rheumatoid arthritis because I don’t have swelling.

i have a sweet dog named Sport (he came with his name.. at the pound when we got him 9 years ago.) and like many other old dogs he has gotten sores on his elbows. i have wood floors and he has arthritis so he kinda slips around and i think his elbows hurt a lot,….. ANYWAY, my question is: do you think i could reduce the pain by putting something on it… like tooth numbing stuff or something… origel or something like that? would it work? i don’t want his poor little elbows to be sore anymore. his bones are sore enough as it is he doesn’t need to be having owie elbows :(
what do ya think yay or nay on putting numbing ointment on my old doggies elbows.
okay people. they are not that bad. and he DOES have beds, many actually! he just likes to lay on the floor .. don’t ask why he only goes on the beds (which are actually cushions off of our old couches) at night when he goes to bed…. but other than that he lays on the wood floor.
you guys are annoying me. i am a wonderful pet owner and take my animals to the vet whenever needed… but the elbow thing is normal for dog .. i have seen it a million times and vets do not care about them. and i am not talking open nasty swollen sores…. it is only because his elbows rub on the hard floors when he gets up and down. OKAY?! so his skin is a little raw there nothing sick or even really terrible. and i already manage his arthritis! i did not ask about the arthritis i asked if it is okay to put numbing ointment on his elbows so it doesn’t hurt! SHEESH. turn you ears on people.
i think i confused people with the arthritis… that really has nothing to do with the sores. it is just an other pain factor that my old pup has to deal with. all the sores are, are just raw skin because of rubbing on the floors….

This happened a week or so ago. One day, my left elbow got sore and stiff. It got progressively worse quickly to where I couldn’t straighten my arm. It was like that a couple days.

On about the third day, I noticed swelling and bruising around my elbow. That lasted a day or two, and then went away. It’s completely back to normal now.

I’ve searched the ‘net and can’t find anything that causes all that–especially the bruising part. I didn’t hit my elbow on anything, fall or anything like that.

My job is pretty repetitive with arm motions, but I use my right arm more often than my left. I do have stiff, achey joints in other parts of my body at times. Could it be arthritis? That wouldn’t bruise, would it?

I welcome any and all guesses. :) Thanks very much.

I know this is something I should be going to the doctors about, which is why I am going to the walk in tomorrow. But anyways, Saturday I woke up and my hands and feet were swollen, I had to pry my rings off and my sandals wouldn’t fit my feet were so swollen. Through Saturday my feet were swollen and began to hurt. By the end of the day all my joints were sore my wrists, fingers, elbows, hips, knees, ankles and toes. Everything feels like they have been over worked. My feet hurt like I have been standing on them all day and walking all day. I can’t make a fist without a tight feeling. All my muscles feels sore and over worked. Keep in mind I’m 20 and have a job where I am moving a lot (but not to a point where I have ever hurt in 3 years). My family and friends say its either rheumatoid arthritis or from not drinking enough water and my body retaining water – thus the swelling. I dunno, it just gets in the way because everything hurts….doing anything is uncomfortable. Last week I did get a TB shot and don’t know if that’s some sort of side effect?

Okies,I asked a q like this before, but my problem is getting a bit more serious @ this stage. My right elbow is SERIOUSLY swollen for the past 2/3 months, and nobody seeme to know whats wrong with it!!=( I’ve gone to a really good orthapedic doc,and he said it was prob bruising or bleeding, and put me ina sling and prescribed anti-inflamatories. So that was grand and we went off, thinking my arm would be as-good-as-new. We made an appt. to see him again after 2 weeks, but my arm was not any bit better. He took x-rays,but they showed no fracture. This was really annoying, because the doc just laughed because he was hiding the fact that he was confused. He said to come bac to him in a few months if I wasn’t getting better. During these months,I was in another hospital, and another doc saw me and he took more x-rays and, again,it showed no fracture. He put it down to tennis elbow, and gave me steroid injections. He said that I’d be better in a few weeks with using the anti-inflamatory gel we have
but the swelling has NOT gone down any bit. I started going to physio, and she doesn’t have a clue whats going on either, but she feels there is something seriously wrong with it. I really don’t know what to do now,and I am in soooo much pain, and the pain is even worse when you don’t know whats wrong with you. We are making an appt with the original doc,but I have a feeling he will say rest, and anti-inflammatories and painkillers(which don’t work anymore)
but I HAVE rested, and done everything I can,but nothings helping!! I really wanna get it sorted,so do you people have any suggestions?? I really need help, its been going on for the past 2-3 months, and I wanna get rid of the pain!!
Please help me,any answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
I doubt its an infection, because I’m not felling more unwell than usual lol,and its not red or anything, but it is radiating heat..???
And ‘singlegal’,thanks, and I have arthritis too,I’m 15. But I will keep trying, and doctors have dismissed me alot too, even in other things, like my ACL,its torn and they said it was something completley different! Thanks a mill.
‘indiarulz’…I would if I could but I can’t. Sori! But I shall describe it: the bone running along the top of the arm(radius?) is 1-3inches more up than on my other arm,and because of this,it looks like it is bent. The bone on the back of my elbow seems quite swollen also…did that help?? oh,and instead of the lower bone in my arm sticking down a bit,it is sticking up into my arm, like its kinda disappeared…

I am curious and would like others opinions.
I have been dealing with throbbing pain since a accident when a very early teen. Over 20 years now.
I had yet another accident within the last 3-4 years. Causing another host of painful outcomes.
Anyhoo I have been talking with others who do not understand that I do not take so many pain killers as to be "out of it". These people do not understand. The group of peeps (it is a medication group) seam to think one should not feel any pain what so ever at anytime!
I am curious how many people think it is OK to feel….pain. I mean when it gets real bad I do take something. I am deathly afraid of being (or getting) addicted to pain killers!! I have kids that need me. I see how other people are and do not want to be this way.
At the moment if I went to the doctors for my arms (tennis elbow? I have RA) I would have to have very painful injections with needle.
My motto Pain is just a way to no you are alive…..

What is your opinion?
I thought I would add I do have a seizure disorder which makes some pain killers off limits to me.
RA is rheumatoid arthritis, some mornings I can not walk, move.

Ginger’s vet and orthopaedic surgeon has prescribed Mobic and now Tramadol, but neither has made a difference. Since Ginger is nearing 10 y.o., I’m trying to avoid surgery. Ginger’s very happy, but her limp is getting worse and worse. What can I do?

I am desperate to figure out what is going on with me. I am a 37 year old female and about a week ago I started gettig a sore and stiff feeling in my hips, it has progressed rapidly to my ankles (now slightly swollen) also my knees and shoulders and elbow joints. What could cause such pain in all my joints. I can not imagine it is arthritis at my age and so sudden. Could it be a pinched nerve or a virus? it seems to be the worse when i am laying in bed at night and unbearable when rising in the morning. I cannot sleep because of the pain. It does seem to get slightly better when I am up walking around. Any ideas?

For 5 weeks now I have had severe joint and body pain mainly in my hands, elbows, shoulders, back of my knees sometimes my hips and bottom of feet and toes. Every morning I wake up with a very sore and swollen throat and lymph nodes hurt and are swollen. I’m extremely tired I can hardly function some days. I have had all sorts of blood tests and they all came back normal except the ebstein barr virus test was a bit high but the doctors told me to not worry about that. I saw a rheumatologist he says 50% chance i have rheumatoid arthritis. I don’t wanna believe that or find it hard to believe because of the sore throat and extreme tiredness to and the swollen lymph nodes in my neck. I’m so fed up the doctor aren’t helping, they have me on prednisone a steroid and it only works a couple hours a day then i’m in chronic pain again. I’m a single mom with two boys and I can hardly take care of them or even dress myself or take care of me. I’m so desperate to find out what is wrong with me. Can anyone help. What do you think it could be. I’m taking all sorts of vitamins nothing helps. HELP PLEASE!

About a year ago,i started experiencing pain in my right elbow.i have worked out for years,so I thought it may have been a strain,or even "tennis elbow" or something along those lines.I stopped lifting for awhile, but after a month or two,the pain appeared in my left elbow as well.About 6 months ago,the pain spread to my shoulders and chest/collarbone area.Any kind of pushing motion brings excruciating pain in the chest/shoulder area.My elbows don’t hurt to bend,or to lift things, but when extended,or when carrying things they ache bad.about a week ago the back of my right hand went numb, and hasn’t gotten better.I wake up several times a night and whatever side I’m on is asleep or in pain. I’m tired ALL the time,no matter how much rest I get.I have seen my physician, she ran a full blood test and after nothing was found, referred me to a rhuematiod arthritis specialist, whom I will see in a week-but all the research I’ve done doesn’t seem to match the symptoms of arthritis.Any ideas?

I have seen my personal physician, a hand surgeon, a chiropractor, and a rheumatologist for this, and none of them can figure out what is wrong with me. I have been tested twice for Lyme, lupus, and arthritis, and all three have come back negative both times. I’m a 22 year old female with no history of severe injury or health problems.

Several months ago the joints on the left side of my body suddenly started to hurt. Most affected were my left wrist and knee, both of which have been injured in the past – tendonitis in my wrist two years ago, mild knee injury six months ago, but neither had given me problems till then. Also affected were my shoulder, elbow, knuckles, and ankle. The pain comes and goes in waves. Exercise and movement seem to make it worse, though staying still does not make it better. It gets worse all the time despite my taking a prescription anti inflammatory every day. The doctors have given me no painkillers. (Out of room for question, will add more details.)
It is severe to the point where I get very little sleep anymore, and have little appetite. I’ve lost five pounds in the last three days (I have very fast metabolism, but this is still abnormal for me). It does not hurt all the time, but when it does I am unable to focus and generally incapacitated if I am at work (I am a secretary). I have been limping regularly as putting weight on my left leg seems to make it worse. In the last few days my right leg has also started hurting, and the pain has started to spread out from the knees all the way to my feet and groin. My right arm is completely fine so far.

I’ve no idea if it’s relevant, but I do have other chronic health problems. I have mild-moderate asthma, vocal chord dysfunction, chronic dry eye, and acid reflux. I have suffered from a chronic stiff neck accompanied by pain for years, though I’ve always assumed that was caused by stress.

If anyone has any idea what might be causing this pain, please tell me. Thank you.
Appropriately enough, I have forgotten to mention a few other symptoms that I have been experiencing: short-term memory loss, difficulty concentrating, and confusion/disorientation, as well as muscle spasms and occasional pins-and-needles tingling in my fingertips. I’ve no idea if all of this is related or perhaps just due to sleep deprivation. The rheumatologist also mentioned to me that my blood tests showed that there is no inflammation.

The rheumatologist suggested that my pain is caused by tendinitis, though he gave no explanation as to how I would suddenly develop tendinitis all over my body without having engaged in any notable physical activity. There is no swelling or other outward physical symptoms, and my family has been very unsupporting, implying that I may be faking this for attention – this is incredibly difficult to deal with and I’m desperate to find a solution. I appreciate the suggestions so far, thanks very much to all who can help.

I routinely receive emails from tennis elbow sufferers, and one of the most common inquiries I receive is, Geoff – if anti-inflammatories are so bad for me and they only mask my tennis elbow pain, Are there any Herbs that I can take that acts as an anti-inflammatory instead of taking ibuprofen?

Answer: Yes, there are a number of excellent anti-inflammatory herbs. The 3 most important are:

* Turmeric (Curcuma longa): Turmeric accounts for the yellow color of curry and American mustard and has a specific sharp often bitter flavor.

Turmeric can be used for many inflammatory disorders such as:

- arthritis

- tendonitis

- auto immune conditions.

Many doctors and health professionals usually recommend taking 400 to 600 milligrams of turmeric tablets/capsules 3X per day or you can follow the instructions on the product label.

If you can get whole turmeric it has been proven to be more effective than isolated curcumin. Seek out curmumin that is made up of 95% curcuminoids.

It is not uncommmon for the full benefits of curcumin to take effect It can take up to 2 months for the full effects of taking curcumin to run its course and gain control of your inflammation and swelling.

Warning:  If you suffer from gallstones or bile duct dysfunction do not consume curcumin. Also, pregnant women shouldn’t use it without the consent of their family doctor.
* Ginger: Powdered dry ginger is an excellent anti-inflammatory. Take one to two capsules  (500 to 1,000 mg) twice a day with food.

As with turmeric, you won’t get the full effect for about two months.

* Boswellin: This is the extract of the herb Boswellia, used in Ayurvedic medicine and available in capsule form.

It may be useful for generalized inflammatory conditions such as fibromyalgia. The dosage is two capsules twice a day unless the product label directs differently.

You can take all of these herbs in combination.

Many herbs also contain antiphlogistic characteristics. Many herbs can be used as the sole or supplementary therapy in auto-immune diseases or as complementary corticosteriod therapies which allow sufferers to ingest smaller doses or shorter rounds of corticosteroids. It’s not uncommon in today’s day and age to various treatment methods to involve both alternative and conventional treatment options which is sometimes referred to as integrative medicine.

I highly recommend you get off the ibuprofen ASAP, as the side effects to taking it on a daily could potentially, in the long run, be dangerous to your health. All my joints crack, and I know there’s nothing wrong with that.. But, After I carry something heavy; my elbow kind of pops/like dislocates a little bit. It hurts, and it happens often. If I’m carrying my books or anything. A lot of the time it’s stiff, and it kind of feels like what I think arthritis might feel like.

I told my mom, since it’s been happening for a while, and she’s like it’s just tennis elbow. But I barely have any symptoms of that. It’s not bruised or swollen or anything.. I get sharp pains in it sometimes.. even if I’m doing nothing.

It was especially sore during softball.. which I’m sure may have been the cause..

But what can this be?

Sorry this is so long…
Again.. it’s not swollen, so I’m not going to take an anti-inflammatory
